Ynn by Way of Dolmenwood

The Gardens of Ynn is a procedurally generated point crawl inspired by Alice in Wonderland, Studio Ghibli films, Made in Abyss, old fairytales (from before they got sanitized), and a smattering of other things. This will take longer than a few sessions to complete. We're using Dolmenwood as the system, 3-5 players needed.  Might also want to bring some retainers. Starting XP is 9000 for PCs, 5000 for retainers. One member of your party has inherited the possessions of a dead relative; a small cottage in the countryside. In the pretty little garden, there is a vine covered wall. On the bedside tables, there are instructions on how to get to ‘The Other Garden’ and a dire warning never to do so. "Find a wall covered in ivy, vines, moss, or similar. Clear that vegetation away, and using chalk and charcoal draw a realistic door (with keyhole, hinges and doorknob) on the surface below. Write upon the door: 'Ynn, by way of Dolmenwood' Leave, so the drawing is no longer visible, and on return the drawing will be replaced by a real door. When it is opened, the Gardens of Ynn will be on the other side." Curiosity has gotten the best of you.

Dolmenwood: Adventure & Peril

Time: BST Weekdays. Hello all! I'm looking to start a Dolmenwood campaign which means I am currently looking for 5 players to venture into one of the strangest, yet most atmospheric fantasy setting I've come across so far. Dolmenwood is a realm of tangled woods, fungus-encrusted glades, and foetid marshes on the wild borders of civilisation. It’s a place filled with intrigue, secrets, and old magic, where travellers are drawn in and rarely leave unchanged. You’ll get to explore the wild Wood, uncover lost treasures, and face the strange things lurking in the dark. Along the way, you’ll also recover relics, forage uncanny herbs, bargain with witches, unravel ancient magic, and get tangled in noble intrigue, before (hopefully) returning to the hearth to share your tales. Most importantly though, you will have the total freedom to shape your journey. I can honestly say that this is the true sandbox most people look for.  The System Dolmenwood is based on DnD B/X so those of you familiar with 5e will have a very easy time picking it up. However, some things are a tad different so expect the following: Player skill > Character Sheet: Your options are not limited to the paper buttons on your character sheet. The game actively encourages out-of-the-box thinking and while you do have various unique skills and traits that will come in handy, a long stick and a sacrificial retainer or two can do the job just as well. Gold = XP: Exploration and treasure hunting are the main drivers of advancement rather than combat, and I will also employ the use of homebrew rules that reward feats of exploration (discovering lost shrines, confirming rumours, etc.) Combat is dangerous: You will always seek ways to gain the upper hand in any encounter. Block in your opponent and throw in molotovs, poison the well, everything goes. Emergent storytelling: PCs will not have the most expansive backgrounds in order to allow for the story to develop organically through play. HOWEVER, there are a couple of amazing tables that will inspire your characters' beliefs, starting trinkets, etc, which I think you will love. About myself The one line that best describes me as a GM is that I’m relaxed, friendly, and here to make sure everyone has a great time. My games are all about good vibes, fun, and group chemistry. I have a bit of an “older brother” style. Guiding things, hyping players up, and making sure everyone feels comfortable jumping in and having their moment. No one gets left on the sidelines. My Hopes I honestly could've easily gotten players off the system's Discord server but I really want to introduce new folk to this wonderful game. Furthermore, I really hope that we'll become friends outside of our sessions as well since to me, joking around and being comfortable with another is more important than mechanically showing up for every session. Game details: We will play using both discord for voice and Foundry VTT for maps and character sheets! You don't need to buy or download anything, I simply have to send you a link and you simply join using it! To conclude: Thanks for reading this my post and if you are interested, please contact me! I hope all of you have a nice day/evening and I hope to talk to you later!

Waters of Dolmenwood

Hello! As a long-time CoC/Spire/Heart GM who's recently gotten into the OSR scene by way of Shadowdark, join me as I learn to run Dolmenwood! We'll play weekly through Discord and Fantasy Grounds. We have 3 players who have completed 2 sessions and are just barely starting to get their feet under them, but we feel having a 4th would really round out the party. We are looking for someone who can commit to this time slot for the next 15-20 sessions, and who will be active and friendly.  Session 3 will be on Monday, May 4th, 17:00 to 21:00 GMT (12:00-4:00 PM EST). Send me a DM to discuss! What are the vibes? This is a free-to-play, beginner-friendly game. I want to run a player-driven game, where plot beats primarily come from your character decisions, pushing you to explore the wild places, unravel the secrets of deep magic, unravel the web of faction motivations, and perhaps journey along fairy-roads. The game will lean towards a LOTR Two-Towers vibe, with touches of The Wicker Man (1973) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Our game will focus on organic exploration through hexcrawl and faction interplay, as the secrets of the world and long-held grudges unfold around the players. What's Dolmenwood? A fantasy setting steeped in folklore and fae, built around the Old School Essentials rules, blending the dark and whimsical, the wonderous and weird. Dolmenwood is a system and a setting, both of which tend toward strong character relationships with the world and the holy, arcane, or fae magics that pervade the layered histories there. - The setting blends inspiration from Tolkien, Dunsany, Machen, folk-horror, and the political intrigue of lords and ladies in high courts. - Play as proud, goat-headed Breggle, a starry-eyed elf stepped straight from Fairy, a tricksome grimalkin cat-fairy, a worldly or hapless human, a fungus-riddled Mossling, or a capricious, bat-faced Woodgrue. - Choose from nine classes: the charming bard, ardent cleric, willful enchanter, dashing fighter, jolly friar, stealthy hunter, haughty knight, enigmatic magician, or wily thief. - Dolmenwood offers us classic dungeon crawls powered by random encounters and flavorful puzzles, and if we progress, engaging hexcrawling and settlements. Table Expectations I love roleplay-focused games, where character relationships unfold between PCs, NPCs, and the environment. For me, the roleplay environment works best when everyone has some commitment to the theme and tone. There's always room for above-the-table jokes and conversation, but I hope you'll feel comfortable embodying your character during gameplay as the story progresses. The OSE system has many rule differences from games I and many players are used to, and as such, players need to be gracious as we all learn the system. Our table will be best suited for players interested in telling stories built on strong character motivation and a genuine curiosity about the setting of Dolmenwood as presented through gameplay. We will be an adult table, respectful, jovial, and LGBTQ+ friendly.

Adventures in the Dolmenwood

Hi folks! I'm Steve, and I'm looking for 3–4 players to join a Dolmenwood campaign. There's already one player onboard, with the aim of having five total — so when someone inevitably can't make it, we've still got a good-sized party to adventure with. The Basics Wednesday evenings, 19:30–23:00 BST (London, UK time) Online via Foundry VTT + Discord for A/V The Game If you don't know it, Dolmenwood is an OSR hex-crawl set in a dark fairy-tale woodland inspired by British folklore. Think enchanted woods, scheming fey, and crumbling ruins rather than epic high fantasy. The campaign will be completely player-led, emergent gameplay — you decide where to go and what to do, and the story emerges around you. No railroads here. I run an RP-heavy table where combats are fast, brutal and generally takes a back seat to story and exploration. If you like the idea of talking your way past a hag one minute and running for your life the next, you'll fit right in. What I Provide Fully set up Foundry VTT All the Dolmenwood books — you don't need to buy a thing A Session Zero to make characters together, set expectations, and make sure everyone vibes before we kick off Who's a Good Fit? You're excited about trying something different — OSR plays nothing like modern D&D. You're comfortable with lethal combat — characters can and will die. It's what makes every decision matter. You value roleplay and creative problem-solving over optimised builds and grid tactics. You enjoy exploration and discovery — poking around a weird mushroom circle or negotiating with a talking fox is just as much "the game" as fighting monsters If you've never played an OSR style game, don't worry - neither have I 😂 However the rules are simple, the focus is on creativity over crunch, and we'll learn together. 🏳️‍🌈 This is an LGBTQ+ friendly table. Everyone is welcome, and I expect all players to be respectful and supportive of one another. No exceptions. About Me (the GM) I'm Steve, born in the 80s, a kid of the 90s. My references are a mix of Ghostbusters crossed with Anchorman. I've been GMing for 10 years and recently wrapped up a two-year PF2e Kingmaker campaign. During that time I spread my wings away from modern d20 fantasy combat games and fell down the TTRPG rabbit hole. Sadly, my old group (bar one!) weren't keen on straying from D&D/PF2e — but every cloud has a silver lining. I'm really looking forward to meeting some new people. If you're interested, please fill out this form and I'll get back to you: https://forms.gle/VwiWhxsFDb7WY69R9
