Age of Worms Adventure Path
The Age of Worms adventure path is structured into 12 chapters, each presenting distinct challenges, locations, and quests for the characters to embark on. With an estimated game time of 15-30 hours per chapter, the campaign spans from the characters' humble beginnings at 1st level to their epic culmination at 21st level.
Without giving away any specific plot details, the campaign revolves around a dark and ancient evil force that threatens the world. The characters find themselves embroiled in a series of events and quests that lead them to confront this malevolent entity known as Kyuss, the Wormgod. The players will encounter cultists, undead creatures, and other foes aligned with Kyuss, all while unraveling a complex web of intrigue and secrets.
Scheduling. Weekly, Mondays @ 7:00 PM EST (GMT-5) for 3.5 hours
We schedule an entire month's worth of sessions in advance and work around people's schedules. We only play if everyone is able to attend. If one person can't make it, we reschedule another day that week. If that is not possible, then we do not play that week. We do sessions to make up for missed ones and occasionally do extra sessions if everyone is up for it.
If a player cannot attend a scheduled game (something comes up) they will try to give as much advance notice as possible. No shows are heavily frowned upon, the first time is forgiven, but a second time is not. So if something happens, you must communicate as people's time are valuable.
We have a committed and serious group of players, with 71 sessions played since November 2024.
- We are looking for someone with enough flexibility to play on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday if scheduling conflicts come up.
- We are looking for someone who is punctual for scheduled sessions and communicates clearly and reliably.
- We are primarily looking for players whose time zones are in or reasonably close to EST. Scheduling is one of the biggest challenges in keeping a game running, and we need players whose time zones allow for some flexibility. A large gap makes it much harder when sessions run late or need to be shifted by 1 to 2 hours.
Highly Lethal Campaign
You are expected to optimize. Those who aren't will either die quickly or be outshined by the other party members. Items may be destroyed as per written combat tactics. Just like how players have access to most books, the monsters do as well. They are improved to perform their written tactics more effectively.
- If you fear or get upset by character death and items being destroyed, then this campaign may not be a good fit for you.
- PC deaths so far: 2 in chapter one, 3 in chapter two, 0 in chapter three, 1 in chapter four, 5 in chapter five.
Serious Tone
We use spreadsheets to track WBL, encumbrance and loot distribute distribution. We use a buyback and downtime day system that is logged through Discord.
- If you're looking for a casual game or prefer a laid-back, low-bookkeeping style, this campaign may not be a good fit for you.
- We're looking for someone who is responsive and reliable with between-session tasks, such as logging downtime days and buyback, updating character sheets after leveling, and updating character tokens in Foundry.
- If your availability is so limited that you can only check Discord or response to messages on one day of the week, this campaign may not be a good fit for you.
Heavily Modified
The adventure path has been adapted from Greyhawk to Forgotten Realms 1374 DR, with changes to the plot, creatures, and NPCs. There is a 34-page player's guide that covers the house rules. Some of these changes may feel familiar if you know the adjustments Paizo made to improve 3.5e, but these are my own interpretations and revisions. In general, martials characters are buffed, spellcasters are mostly unchanged, and obvious abuses/cheese are not allowed.
- If you're not already comfortable with 3.5e rules, you may find the system and house rule changes be overwhelming.
Some House Rules in use:
- Appraise checks are used for finding buyers to sell party loot. Results affect the sell price.
- Open Lock is removed and is done through Disable Device.
- Evocation spell rebalancing.
- Mundane armor, weapons, templates and special material rebalancing
- Fighter bonus feat rebalancing (prereqs, merging of feats, scaling in power); feats such as two-weapon fighting, weapon focus, precise shot, etc.
- Some feats are turned into Skill Tricks.
- Realistic limits on the size of carried weapons and items will be observed.
- Heavy armor and heavy load causes fatigue after long periods.
- Downtime days (DTD) are awarded per session. Spent as a party that advances the calendar.
- Resurrection material component costs are lessened. Resurrection is paid from your character's personal wealth.
- Raised characters do not lose a level, they gain resurrection sickness (similar to negative levels) that is temporary.
- Players are locked into roles (cleric, arcanist, bruiser, trapfinder/scoundrel), unless there is a multiple PK or a TPK, they may switch roles.
- Inventory, treasure and loot distribution is carefully tracked in google sheets.
- Buyback system in place for loot distribution. Buyback at 50%.
- Party loot is split into 5 shares (1 for each PC and 1 for party fund).
- Party fund is for party purchases, must be agreed upon each member.
- Sharing/gifting wealth to other players is not allowed.
- Action points are used to reduce lethality due to bad luck.
- Alternate turning rules are used due to large amounts of undead. Tracking fleeing enemies suck.
- Bloodied status, enemies are blooded at 50% hp.
- Combat maneuvers; aim, counter-attack, play dead, out-of-turn dodge.
Your Role as the Trapfinder
For balanced party comp, each player has their own role they fulfil within the party (bruiser, cleric, arcanist, trapfinder). You will fill the Trapfinder role.
The Trapfinder prevents party deaths from mechanical and magical traps by specializing in the only two essential skills in the game: Search and Disable Device, supported by the Trapfinding class ability. While locks and doors can often be bypassed by force, some published modules include deadly traps that demand a dedicated trapfinder to avoid instant party wipes. Having spells that could mitigate these traps doesn’t replace the need for a reliable specialist, as those spells may not always be available.
Character Creation Guidelines
- ECL 11 (Max Race LA+1, No templates for new characters)
- 32-pt buy for ability scores
- Standard WBL (no single item exceeding 1/4 WBL, no combined items for new characters)
- No multiclass penalty
- Flaws and traits allowed
- HP: either roll your HD (official rolls in Discord) or take the average
- Official 3.5e sources are allowed, including Dragon Magazine and Forgotten Realms 3.0/3.5 material, except for CP and XPH, homebrew, third-party, and other campaign-specific books are not allowed.
Considerations when building your Trapfinder
- You are expected to optimize.
- You should have both melee and ranged options and be able to deal damage to contribute.
-If you get sneak attack, be aware that there are undead, constructs, oozes, elementals. It is especially undead heavy. You should plan accordingly.
- Open Lock is replaced by Disable Device.
- Waterdeep has mark up prices on everything. Gather Information is used to purchase items at normal 1.0 rates
Current Party Composition
They are high powered and very optimized:
- (bruiser role) LE Goliath Cloistered Cleric 1/Fighter 2/Crusader 3/Ruby Knight Vindicator 4
- (arcanist role) CE Gray Elf Beguiler 6/Mindbender 1/Shadowcraft Mage 5
- (cleric role) N Arcane Gnome Archivist 5/Divine Oracle 2/Thaumaterge 5
