City of Mist

Urban Fantasy Noir RPG

Overview

City of Mist is a noir urban fantasy tabletop roleplaying game about ordinary people who carry the soul of a legend inside them, created by Amit Moshe and published by Son of Oak Game Studio. It was funded on Kickstarter in 2016, where it raised $104,313 from 1,762 backers, and released in 2017. Modiphius Entertainment co-published it from 2018. The game was split into a Player's Guide and a Master of Ceremonies (MC) Toolkit in 2019, and a Starter Box followed in November 2020. It won a Silver ENnie in 2017, a Gold ENnie for interior art in 2018 and a Gold ENnie for Best Aid/Accessory in 2021, and in 2024 it won French awards, the Graal d'Or and the Grog d'Or. The system loosely evolved from

Description

Players take on Rifts, people whose everyday selves are joined to a mythical identity, such as a figure from legend, folklore or fairy tale, in a rain-soaked city where a hidden world of myth presses against the mundane one. The MC, the game's name for its Game Master, runs mysteries and conflicts in a noir setting, and the characters balance the lives they are trying to keep with the powers they have inherited. The game asks a table for investment in character drama. Each character has two identities that pull in different directions, and the story often turns on which one takes the lead. It suits groups who like detective stories, moral compromise and personal stakes, more than groups who want to optimise a build.

Playstyle: Heavy roleplay, narrative-driven, and collaborative. About Me as a Player Character Creation: I love making goofy, endearing, or overly dramatic characters who somehow bumble through high-stakes situations. Drama and Lore: I actively look to create intricate player dramas and add rich details to the worlds we play in, giving GMs plenty of fun plot hooks to work with. Collaboration: I care far more about emotional arcs, character choices, and team dynamics than crunching numbers or optimizing stats. If you are looking for a player who brings deep storytelling, creative worldbuilding, and a healthy dose of memorable silliness to the table, let us connect!

Let’s go on an adventure together! I'm looking for a free, cooperative, consent-based, story-focused TTRPG table. I enjoy character-driven games with party relationships, meaningful combat, exploration, mystery, downtime, and earned emotional moments. Ideal balance: about 40% roleplay, 20% combat, 40% exploration. I like sincere games with humor, but not constant bits, edgelord behavior, or main character syndrome. I fit best with players who share spotlight, cooperate, respect boundaries, and care about everyone’s character mattering. Consent and safety are important to me. Heavy themes, PvP, romance/flirting, sexual content, intense character conflict, or major effects on another PC should be discussed first. Lines and veils should be respected. I’m in Hawaiʻi Time / UTC-10. Weekends are best, and I prefer 2–3 hour sessions. I’m open to voice, PBP, or hybrid formats. Not a good fit for bigotry, disruptive rules-lawyering, non-cooperative play, unconsented PvP/romance/sexual content, trauma dumping, or using RPGs as therapy.

I am a ttrpg player of 6 years. Mostly in dnd, but I have experience playing PF2E, Fabula Ultima and Thirsty Sword Lesbians. Additionally I have read up a bit on most if not all of the systems I'm interested in! I enjoy finding a specific vibe for my characters, like a fighting style, a specific backstory, an aesthetic etc. I then push a system to fulfil that vibe to it's fullest, committing entirely to that bit, even to the character's detriment at times. I am also an avid heroforge user and deeply enjoy making heroforge models of all the pcs! When actually playing I try my best to use my character not just to their own end, but also to try my best within my characters personality, to empower other players. My fatal flaw is definitely my attention span, I am distracted very easiily, something I have been working to mitigate for a while, but that I'm not sure I'll ever fully ditch. I am looking for a Wednesday game that starts no later than 12am GMT (yes I know thats technically thursday xD). I also have little preference for the system.

Name: Jay Pronouns: She/her Timezone: Eastern (GMT -5) System: D&D 5e (2014 or 2024) (Open to others) Platforms: Discord, Roll20, Foundry VTT, DnD Beyond (Open to others) Discord: jay.iz.exhausted Availability: Sundays from 5-10pm, Mondays & Tuesdays from 2-10pm What I'm looking for: A consistent group/DM for a bi-weekly or monthly long-term campaign. Not as experienced in D&D, so looking for a group that is welcoming and helpful towards newer players. I want to get immersed in the world and the story, and I want to find a table that's welcoming and also fits that lighthearted friend group vibe. About me as a player: I'm content just being part of the game, through the serious and the silly, the scheming and the meme-ing. I tend to lean towards caster classes since I like casting spells more than just doing a martial class, but I am willing to try out other classes. I'm more into lighthearted campaign that get a little serious, but I am also into mystery and political intrigue as well. I'm pretty good with attendance and communication. About me: I like listening to music and D&D podcasts, and also enjoy wrestling. I've only started to play D&D about 4 years ago. Deal-breakers: - Paid games (I don't have money like that) - Use/endorsement of generative AI - Disrespect towards LGBT+, POC, or people with disabilities - Use of slurs or disrespectful jokes - Horror or excessive gore (light horror is fine) - Romance (don't know how to play that) Feel free to message here or on Discord. I look forward to discussing things with you.

I’m an experienced GM, have run multiyear campaigns, and I regularly run games at local conventions. Preferred Systems: Mostly not D&D or similar traditional fantasy games.  Recent games include Agon, Unknown Armies, Call of Cthulhu, Delta Green, Mothership, Pendragon, Mythic Bastionland, Alien, Blade Runner, Symbaroum, Starforged, Over the Edge, Swords of the Serpentine, and Paranoia.  But I generally enjoy learning new systems Preferred Playstyle: Narrative and investigation are my first choice. I like roleplaying heavy games where choices carry weight and the setting matters: occult conspiracy, espionage, horror, gritty sci-fi, mythic adventure. Combat is fine when it’s brief, tense, and consequential rather than a grind. Character death in earned circumstances is fine.  I'm open to romance in games if the table is bought in.  I don't need a lot of rules but I care about the rules we agree on being consistent and well understood.  I enjoy and run both traditional RPGs and GMless story games. Preferred Tone: Serious stakes with room for humor. Warm, character-driven humor or dark humor works for me; contempt-driven or goofy comedy doesn’t.   I prefer a grounded game but pulp is fine as long as we're all on the same page. I’m happy to run a one-shot when the regular GM needs a break.

Been playing since around 2018. Started (and continued) with DnD5e but tend to (also) enjoy simpler and/or more narrative systems.

Update log - September 2026 "Support us"

As we step away from the summer months, we find ourselves more at our tables. Tables for playing and also working on features and fixes for Groupfinder. And there have been quite a few additions since our last Update log. We'll go over some of the bigger changes and additions. Supporters /images/general-media/1789388957_fqCygV2e.png Some of you may have noticed in the menu dropdown a little page called Subscribe. Worry not, this does not mean, that Groupfinder is going to be pay to use. No, far from it. We are sticking by what we have been saying since the start - Groupfinder will remain free to use. Becoming a subscriber is your way of supporting our ongoing work on the platform. To make sure the lights stay on, the servers buzzing and the licenses get paid, we have to make sure all those costs don't overwhelm us. What does it mean to be a subscriber? As a thank you, for your help and trust in us, your account will have some ease of life perks: Automatic bumping - you can set up automatic bumping for your posts, helping your post stay refreshed. Once you set it up, every 48 hours, the system will bump your post moving it back to the top of the listings. Customized notifications - want to only receive specific notifications and alerts for games and players in a specific region and game system? You can set your specific rules for custom alerts. Colour themes for your posts - Feel a little red? Green? blue? Customize your posts with the colour theme you prefer, make your post stand out with a little cosmetic tweak.  More cover pictures - Supporters will also find that they have access to a whole new set of cover images to choose from. If you are tired of the ones you have seen so far - you will find more from the selection we present the subscribers. Higher limits - If you have more than two games you are looking players for - you will be able to have up to six different active game posts at once. You will also be allowed to send more messages to new users every day. Attach files - perhaps your games have a world map you'd like to show off to make players more interested in it - you can add some files to your post and make it more informative. And various limit increases and customization options for Group Manager and for those who manage a library entry page. You can read more about the subscription here. And if you don't care about those perks - but you think we are doing a neat job - that can be your motivation as well. Messenger On desktop devices, you will find our messenger in the bottom right corner of the page, allowing you to chat with others in a more intuitive manner, just like you may be used to on various other platforms. We will continue to improve the messaging experience as we go forward, but we are very happy with the way it is now. Ofcourse you can continue using messenger, how it was before, as a full-page view. Tiles for Group Manager /images/general-media/1789389492_W7MfXXwR.png In addition to various improvements for the Group Manager, we are happy to announce tiles.  Tiles are small customizeable and editable dynamic elements, that you can add to your Group Manager dashboard to add various features to them.  Add images, spell, item, skill lookup searches, connect your notes to your Obsidian markdown files and keep them synced with what you have on your computer or just add a slideshow to set the mood for the game. Badges /images/general-media/1789389332_qdibSnHO.png Show off your activity and achievements on Groupfinder with the badges you have earned here. There are various ways to earn badges, some you get for reaching out to users on the platform, some you get for bumping. You may be considered a librarian, if you help us improve the library.  And with higher tier badges, you will also unlock unique perks (such as lower daily bumping cooldown, or additional unique cover images). Posts and listings We also took some time to optimize the filtering options on the posts pages. We added additional features to the search, and with that it slowly started getting out of hand. So it was time to take a step back and look at the whole listings filter as a whole and bring it all together, again. Many of these fixes and tweaks have been things you, the users, have asked for. Just like the option to also exclude tags from your search. Don't want to see games that have a "Horror" theme? Take it out and no spooky season for you. We admit that for some time the "Create a post" flow was.. messy. Again the same deal, as with filters - we added fields, elements, options and much more to it. But it resulted in the pages being overly cluttered and some fields may have been accidentally overlooked. Now the flows have been reworked and should make it a lot easier for you to create your player post or add your games to the listings. Also to all of our multilingual friends - you can now write your post description in multiple languages. I mean.. you could also before - but now it is more reasonably separated and structured. Those with a game post will also have access to more detailed analytics about your post. Knowing and understanding more about those, who open your post, can help you tweak and tailor your post in various ways. A more organized library /images/general-media/1789390627_QjshwGXo.png Don't you just hate it when your local library is a mess. Well ours was a bit messy - so we cleaned it up and made it make more sense. The new library home page now offers you a better overview of what is new, what is popular and which events are upcoming. Speaking of events - if you know of any upcoming tabletop events that might interest others - tell us about them and we'll try to get those added to the library as well. And much, much more In addition to all the topics we've covered here, there have been a vast amount of additional changes - not necessarily smaller and less important. We just have to keep these update logs at a reasonable length. If you have any feedback regarding these changes (or lack of an update you were hoping for) - do let us know. Either use the contact us form, or join our Discord server and let us know there. We are always happy to discuss and learn from you. Till next time.
