Starfinder 2E

Overview

Starfinder Second Edition is Paizo's sci-fi/science-fantasy tabletop RPG, a full rebuild of the original 2017 Starfinder Roleplaying Game announced at Gen Con 2023 and released across 2025 following a year-long public playtest. Rather than running on its own separate rules the way 1st edition did, Starfinder 2E is built to be fully cross-compatible with
Pathfinder Second Edition https://www.groupfinder.gg/library/pathfinder-2nd-edition-2019
and its 2023 Remaster, sharing the same three-action economy and switching from Wizards of the Coast's Open Game License to Paizo's own Open RPG Creative (ORC) License. The line launched with Starfinder Player Core in July 2025 and Starfinder GM Core that September, with an Alien Core rounding out the initial trio of core rulebooks.

Description

Playing Starfinder 2E means playing across the Pact Worlds and beyond, a galaxy-spanning science-fantasy setting where mystic spellcasters and laser-rifle-toting soldiers operate side by side, using rules deliberately built to share a common language with Pathfinder 2E. Since it launched on the same PF2E chassis, a GM comfortable with one system can pick up the other with relatively little relearning, and material can be ported between the two settings with GM permission. Reviewers have noted the 2E launch trimmed the class list to six at release - with the Mechanic and Technomancer, mainstays of 1st edition, still finishing their own playtest for a later release - while significantly expanding species and other player options compared to the original core book.

Key features

Shared Three-Action Economy with Pathfinder 2E

Every character gets three actions plus a reaction each turn, the same system Pathfinder 2E uses, letting the two games share actual mechanical DNA rather than just a family resemblance.

Built on the ORC License

Starfinder 2E moved away from Wizards of the Coast's Open Game License entirely, publishing instead under Paizo's own Open RPG Creative License, developed in the wake of the 2023 OGL controversy.

A Three-Book Core Split

Rather than one core rulebook, the line launched across three separate volumes - Player Core, GM Core, and Alien Core - splitting player options, GM tools like encounter building and starship combat, and playable species into their own dedicated books.

Cinematic Starship Combat and Hacking Subsystems

The GM Core folds in dedicated subsystems for chases, cinematic starship combat, research, and hacking and infiltration, directly addressing complaints that 1st edition's starship rules felt disconnected from the rest of the game.

The Star Hoarder's Cache

Hey everyone! I’m Alan, and I GM for a group of lovable misfits online. We've been together around 3 years now, and are getting ready to launch our next grand sci-fi campaign: The Star Hoarder's Cache! If you love deep character development, witty table banter, and adventures where your choices genuinely shape the story, we’d love to meet you! We’re currently looking for 1–2 dedicated roleplayers to round out our crew. The Campaign Hook: Think Guardians of the Galaxy meets Firefly, Mass Effect, and Treasure Island. Expect a scrappy, found-family crew chasing legendary fortunes across uncharted frontiers. The tone balances high-stakes galactic intrigue, sharp comedic banter, and meaningful character arcs. Your past catches up with you, the galaxy reacts dynamically to your decisions, and every crew member has a vital voice in where your ship flies next. We used the Adventure Path 'Murder in Metal City' to onboard us into SF2e, and are ready to tackle a homebrew campaign. About the GM & Table Style The Style: I bring 3 years of GMing experience backed by a long history studying improv at Second City. That means dynamic scenes, distinct NPC personalities, and an adaptive GM approach where player creativity, humor, and bold ideas are rewarded. The Current Crew: Our table consists of two women, and three men. (Including me, the GM) We're looking for another 1-2 players to round out the table. Immersion & Focus: To maintain high energy and uninterrupted roleplay during game night, our sessions are recorded and privately uploaded so that only table members have access. This allows me to stay 100% present in the moment while ensuring every player decision, inside joke, and plot thread is captured accurately between sessions without breaking the flow for note-taking. The Atmosphere: We are an inclusive, collaborative, and communicative group. We share the spotlight, support each other's character arcs, and prioritize fun, respectful storytelling above all else. We utilize safety tools like X-Cards and establish clear boundaries/lines & veils ahead of time. If a session is likely to involve heavier depictions of potentially difficult topics, I make a point to remind everyone of the X-Card options and check in with players ahead of time. Campaign Length: Our table enjoys campaigns around 12 sessions long. We've run four of them so far using PF2e. I try to focus on an overarching narrative while weaving in the backstories and goals of the party members. Some backstory plots get resolved along with the main campaign; while others are given clues and breadcrumbs into our next campaign. Logistics & Requirements System: Starfinder 2e / Pathfinder 2e We started as a PF2e group, and after 3 years; are trying out SF2e. The two systems are practically the same, except for minor tweaks Platform: Foundry VTT for gameplay, Discord for out-of-character crew banter. Schedule: Twice per month, running on a weekday evening (Mon, Tue, Wed, or Thu based on group consensus), 6:30 PM – ~11:00 PM CST. Tech: Clear working microphone, reliable internet, and a PC/browser capable of running Foundry VTT smoothly. Webcam use is encouraged, but optional. Age: 21+ I aim to run a PG-13/Sometimes 'R' rated table. We focus on keeping things friendly, with strictly zero-tolerance for bigotry or toxic behavior. How to Apply If you want to join our crew, send me a direct message with brief answers to the following: Experience: What is your background with Pathfinder 2e, Starfinder 2e or tabletop RPGs? (Beginners to the system are welcome!) Playstyle: What draws you to TTRPG's; Combat/Strategy, Improv/Character development or creating a Shared-Storyline? Crew Pitch: Give a 2–3 sentence concept of a character you’d be excited to play. What motivates them? Table Dynamic: What energy do you hope to bring to the table in our story-driven campaign? Applications will remain open until we find the right fit, followed by a brief, casual chat on Discord to make sure we're all on the same page before jumping in with Session 1. (We'll go over table expectations, a short tutorial for using FoundryVTT, any Off-Limit topics, etc.) Looking forward to welcoming you to our table!

Forever GM looking to finally sit in the players seat. I cut my teeth on DnD 5e 2014, but found my love with Pathfinder 2e Remastered. I like deeply involved systems, playing characters with large toolkits or that support the group(Tank/Healer).

Generators
Free
donjon is a legendary, minimalist suite of web-based procedural generators that has served as the "Swiss Army Knife" for Game Masters since its first dungeon generator went live in 1999. Created and maintained by a developer known as drow, the site eschews modern flashy graphics and subscriptions in favor of raw utility and speed. In late 2025 and 2026, the site saw a significant "5.5 Refactor," adding full support for the 2024 D&D Core Rules, including new treasure tables, encounter calculators, and Bastion event generators. Description donjon is the ultimate tool for the "Zero-Prep" GM. It is a collection of text and image-based algorithms that can generate everything from a single NPC to an entire star system in less than a second. While newer tools focus on 3D visuals, donjon remains a favorite because it is incredibly lightweight; it loads instantly on any device and provides high-density information without any clutter. It is the "source code" of many GMs' campaigns, providing the mechanical backbone for loot, encounters, and world-building data. System Overview & Key Features Random Dungeon Generator The crown jewel of the site. It creates fully mapped-out dungeons with "old-school" aesthetics. You can specify the level, layout, and "dungeon motif" (like Sunken Temple or Abyssal Rift), and it will populate the map with traps, secret doors, wandering monsters, and room descriptions automatically. D&D 5.5 / 2024 Core Support New for 2026, the site features a dedicated "5.5" section. This includes an updated Encounter Size Calculator that accounts for the 2024 power scaling, as well as a Magic Shop Generator that utilizes the new pricing and item rarity structures introduced in the latest D&D revision. Fractal World Generator This tool uses a recursive algorithm to generate entire world maps with realistic coastlines, islands, and tectonic-like features. GMs can adjust the "Ice Limit," "Water Percentage," and "Scale" to create a unique continent or a planet-wide archipelago in seconds. Sci-Fi and Weird Fiction Suites Beyond fantasy, donjon is the premier source for Star Wars (d6/d20) and Traveller star system generators. It also features a Weird Fiction section for Call of Cthulhu players, generating eldritch tomes, blasphemous rituals, and sanity-testing NPCs. The "Endless Oubliette" For GMs running "Megadungeons," this tool uses Dyson Logos-style geomorphs to generate an infinitely expanding dungeon. As players move through the map, the GM can keep generating new sections, ensuring the dungeon literally never ends. HTML and TSV Exports Almost every generator on the site allows you to export results as a raw text file or a portable HTML page. This is essential for GMs who want to copy-paste generated NPCs directly into Discord or import loot tables into Foundry VTT or Obsidian.
