Critical Mass: Chain Reaction

Roleplay focused

Homebrew
While the tensions between the U.G.N. and The Golden Horde heighten, a party of adventurers are sent out to North Silica along the Black Silver River to uncover an ancient artifact that could change the tide of the coming war entirely.
Critical Mass: Chain Reaction is a Weird Fiction / Fantasy Adventure campaign set in the homebrew setting of ATYMOS, using the D&D5.5e rules, along with custom homebrew backgrounds, species, and subclasses.
The tone of this campaign is light-horror post-apocalyptic fantasy, weird fiction with a lot of geopoliticial set pieces. It will mostly follow average, everyday adventurers from the world trying to navigate it while dealing with people from various factions and nations. LGBTQIA+ characters are expected and normalized in this setting.
Be prepared for strange encounters, dealing with cruel monsters, and encountering deadly NPCs and monsters. Not everything in this setting is meant to be fought, especially not by you.
REQUIREMENTS
* Ability to play weekly on Wednesday, 5:30PM PST.
* Access to a Discord account, and a browser. We will be using FoundryVTT as a virtual tabletop, and Discord to be able to call.
* A baseline familiarity with the D&D 2024 Rules
EXPECTATIONS
* An interest in collaborative storytelling and roleplay
* A willingness to work together with the other players and the DM
* This is a 70/30 Roleplay campaign, we’ll be doing a lot of roleplaying and combat will be sparse but deadly. The main expectation is to be levelling up slowly, and facing few enemies, spending the majority of your time in roleplay and exploration encounters. To me, Exploration and Roleplay are the same.
* Please try to be present for all sessions. Depending on how many players end up in the campaign (I’m looking for 3-4), we won’t have the wiggle room for characters to disappear for sessions at a time.
* I'm planning on having Session 0 on the 28th of January, starting at the regular time.
* Show up without a character pre-made. This is a homebrew setting and a very specific group-goal, so I would like to work with you and the other players to create characters that work for this campaign.
* While nothing is outright banned, please try and be mindful of the gameplay experience for other players, and yourself. If you try and build a character that can wipe out combat encounters in one turn but has nothing to do outside of combat, and everyone feels its unfun, expect to have a sit-down and discuss possible alternatives.
* I will be experimenting with XP Leveling in this campaign, and have active discussions with players about how they feel about it.
* If you have any questions about the setting or your character's place in it, I would love to have a 1 on 1 to discussion with you.
* This is a given, but please be respectful to the other players.
SETTING:
The Setting of ATYMOS primaries takes place on the continent of Nostia, a gloomy and sodden land healing from the scars of an ancient war that ended the technological age. Cross-continental nations rise out of the ashes of the old world, and factions fight for control of pre-war resources and current day populations. Most will spend their lives living in small wooden towns, using scraps and whatever they can find to make the most out of their lives. Others are enthralled in geopolitics, working for or with various nations to help achieve larger goals or to make their way in the world. As the monsters of the Age of Heroes have adapted, so too will the citizens have to adapt, to survive in ATYMOS.
You are all hired adventurers from the U.G.N., on a mission to retrieve a mysterious artifact from before the war. You will have to track it down, as the U.G.N. only know if it through whispered words and rumors, and deal with anyone else who has caught the sent of this mystery.
The setting features all of the Core D&D Playable Species, along with two custom species, the Longdead and the Mechanoid.
