Description

“Let no soul of Cestead call the bounty of the deep his own until he hath laboured for its recovery. Prince and pauper, clerk and captain, each shall take his appointed turn aboard the ships of scavenging; for the city is built from what the sea relinquishes, and no citizen may share in its shelter who will not first share in its gathering.” — The Admiral’s Primer, Volume IX: On Service and the Common Salvage, Verse 12.
---
When the world ended, everything changed. The series of natural disasters that shattered the land and raised the sea levels meant the nations of the world were no longer a force to reckoned with. In fact, they were no longer anything at all. The oceans of the world churned and roiled and when they finally calmed, there was no land left for civilization to stand on. But that didn’t mean there was nothing left; out in the limitless wash of water that the world had become, five ships had - through happenstance or fate - come together and lashed themselves together to ride out the storm. As time went by, other ships would find them on the sea, and join them for safety and security forming a makeshift city on the water, the last bastion of life, the final floating example of culture and society - Cestead. You’ve recently returned from your second sea scavenging mission - a full month away from your floating home - but the promise of an actual payday and more Noted status got you back on the boat as soon as the opportunity was offered to you. The law states that everyone must do their time on the Gathering Runs, but only the desperately brave, or the bravely desperate do a second; and those who do more are usually somehow both. As you disembark, and return to the Gather to receive your pay, you don’t see the person watching you carry your single bag of belongings away from the docks, as you start to smell the scents and see the sights of home that you either missed, or wanted to escape in the first place. But rest assured, they saw you, and made a decision to offer you another way to achieve your goals; whether or not you choose to meet them and take them up on their offer is entirely up to you. But here on Cestead, the quiet rarely prosper, and the taste of salt on your face is perhaps growing tiresome. Wouldn’t you like to see what you can make for yourself, or make for your family? Some offers are too good to be refused, after all….

Greetings, adventurer! We are a powerful duo of 2 DMs (one early 30s and one late 30s) looking for up to five players to join us in a long-term homebrew campaign. We welcome everyone, especially want to encourage people of color, women, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community to apply! We want our game to be a collaborative, safe and fun place for everyone involved so we intend to be very thoughtful and selective throughout the recruitment process. Absolutely no racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia or any other discriminatory behavior will be tolerated. This game is online so applicants should have a reliable internet connection and good quality mic and webcam as we intend to play with video to facilitate nonverbal communication in-game. We understand that not everyone may be comfortable with video, but we feel it’s necessary for the collaborative and connected storytelling experience that we are looking for in this campaign. We will be using D&D 5e (2014) as a ruleset, though the world and the characters are entirely homebrew - though if you have a particular love for 5.5e (2024), we are certainly willing to hear you out! Sessions will be held weekly on Wednesdays at 6:00pm CST for approximately 3.5 hours. We’ll use Roll20 for the VTT, Discord for voice/video, and D&D Beyond for character sheets (with Beyond20 browser plugin). Before applying, please ensure that you are available at this time and able to commit to attend sessions every week (exceptions for missing games occasionally due to life events, of course). While we don’t plan to include any mature content, we will only consider applicants who are at least 18+. No prior experience with D&D is necessary, but applicants should be interested in a story-driven campaign with lots of roleplay (since that’s one of the things we enjoy the most) and be willing to invest time in creating an interesting character that fits the world and supports the party. We expect players to remain in-character during sessions (bonus points for doing a character voice, but not required), avoid metagaming, and be collaborative and respectful. No min/maxers, spotlight hogs, loot hoarders, or PVP will be allowed. To be sure that you have read this far, please list your favorite magic item and why in the last question of your application. We plan to keep the application open until Monday 27th, so please be patient while we review everyone’s application. We will reach out to select applicants over Discord to arrange an interview with us. We’re planning for Session 0 to be held in August and for the campaign to officially start on Wednesday 2nd September.

Newbie friendly
New players are welcome, and nobody expects you to know the rules beforehand.
Hello everyone, Alex here! I am a new GM on Start Playing, and I am looking for players for my mini campaign. I am hoping to become a full-time GM and figured this was the best way to start. A bit about me: I've been a GM for 7 years. I am an artist, illustrator, animator, voice actor, and writer. And I absolutely love roleplaying!  Game Premise: In the world of Anangnibi (pronounced Ah-nahng-nee-bee) there looms a threat to the local towns and villages outside of a major port city called Agonan Mizhakwad (pronounced Ah-goh-nahn Meez-hahk-wahd). Reports of attacks have become more frequent and many have claimed to see a flying creature up within the mountains. Maps indicate that there is an old fort that has been empty for quite some time in the area. The local authorities have put up a reward for heroes to go and investigate the area and find out what has been happening. You as the heroes will find yourselves walking into the mountains to find the old hold, and once you get there, you'll find out that you have gotten far more than you bargained for. Who, or what, awaits within the halls of old abandoned stone? And will you survive the secrets within? Or will you be claimed by death much the same as those of the poor raided villages? Death lurks here, cold and indifferent like the sitting stone. You will need your strength and wit if you want to survive. So be prepared to face the challenges and discover the mystery of what hides within the mountain stone. Game Price: $25 per person  Session count: 1-3 sessions Session length: 4-5 hours Player Character Level: 5 System: D&D 5E Sourcebooks accepted: PHB 14, XGE, TCE, VGM (Other sourcebooks are open to discussion) Homebrew and 3rd Party: Open to discussion More information and details about the game can be found here on the Start Playing post: https://startplaying.games/adventure/cmt21mabu0037l404tjn7c32u?ref=cmrmikhi800frl704k6ca84nl  Content warning: While I am a newbie player friendly DM/GM, the game I am running is a DEADLY game with a DEADLY dungeon; your characters have a high chance of dying. Please keep that in mind for this game. If you are not okay with character death, this may not be the game for you.  If you have any additional questions, please feel free to message me, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.  You can also get some more general information about me as a GM, as well as read previous player reviews through my Start Playing GM Profile here:  https://startplaying.games/gm/alexthedmpanda Looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Mortum

Homebrew
House rules, a custom setting, or a system the Game Master wrote themselves.
Horror
The game leans into fear, tension and dark themes.
The Pitch When you were young you grew up with stories of the gods moon, sun and star. They were there for you, took care of you, and inspired you. The Sun, bright and ever-present, would light the path and grow the world. The Star would guide the people and inspire those who looked to her for such. The moon was stalwart in his defence of the mortals below him, willing to be the villain in the dark if that meant that his mortals would be safe.  The three Gods often competed in followers and worshipers, all in good fun. Seeing mortals as their children, each striving to be their favorite parent in a way. The yearly festivals are all based on this friendly competition, but those who are very devoted followers claim that this balance between the three keeps the world in tune.  This was life for the people of Polarius.  Until two years ago when a new king was crowned. King Tonto worshiped a god known only as Mukoro, said to be a previously unknown God of prosperity and ease. Mukoro skyrocketed in popularity over the last two years and people have noticed changes in the world linked to the domains of the Three. Mukoro reassures its followers that it controls those domains now, but some of the population are uneasy. This tension cannot last forever.  Players are encouraged to build characters with thoughtful interactions with the gods, approach the world with curiosity vs coldness, and remember that sometimes your adversaries are not always evil.  Tone & Feel Mysterious, Uncanny, Whimsy, Fear, Cosmic, Victorian   Themes Cosmic Romance, Toxic love, Overconsumption, overreliance, necessary evil, the horror of irrelevance  Touchstones Local 58, Gemini Home Entertainment, King in Yellow, House of Leaves, Vita Carnes, Twilight Zone, Miss Peregrine's home for Peculiar Children Content warnings  Gaslighting, Abusive relationships, political differences, truths being shattered general violence
