The Lord of the Rings - Bree and the Barrow Downs

Roleplay focused
Conversation, character and story take up most of the table time.
Horror
The game leans into fear, tension and dark themes.
The Lord of the Rings Bree and the Burrow Downs - Set in Middle-earth using the MERP Module - Bree and the Barrow downs - Following Advanced Dungeon & Dragons 2nd Edition rules. - Preferably in person at The Rouge and Raven in Carthage, TN - Open to virtual as a last resort - Once weekly for 1-1.5 hours for 16 weeks Bree-land is a small, settled area in central Eriador that lies just to the east of the Tyrn Gorthad, the ancient Barrow-downs. The region has been almost continuously inhabited since the First Age. In T.A. 1700 Bree is not much different than it would beat the time of the War of the Ring some 1300 years later — a prosperous, quiet but sometimes threatened farming community standing near the intersection of the Great East Road and the Greenway, the two major thoroughfares of the Kingdom of Arnor. Bree-land is quite small and contains four villages within its boundaries: Bree, on the western slope of Bree Hill; Staddle, on the other side of the hill; Combe, a few miles to the east, and Archel, which lies a few miles northeast of Bree. The Chetwood, a good- sized but tame forest is also considered part of Bree-land and lies just north of Archet. The whole region is a generally pleasant, peaceful, and law-abiding spot where Men and Hobbits dwell together in peace, facing danger but rarely — unless one ventures to the Barrow-downs in search of gold and jewels and magic items, or is unfortunate enough to run into the bandits that plague the highways outside of Bree-land proper. But the people of Bree-land generally ignore the haunted and foreboding Barrow-downs to the west. These grassy hills hold the graves of the Kings, Queens, Princes and aristocrats of Arnor. In the years after the Plague the mounds became haunted by evil spirits from Angmar and Rhudaur called Wights. The downs are rich in treasure and adventure, but it would be prudent for the adventurous to seek the council of the wise before trying their luck in the ancient and eerie tombs. [adnd 2e] The city of amber

Homebrew
House rules, a custom setting, or a system the Game Master wrote themselves.
LGBTQ+ friendly
The table is openly welcoming to LGBTQ+ players.
About the Group This is a "new" group but the three existing players have played with me before, we are 25-40 years old, male players We play every second sunday, 11-18, I cook lunch. Starting level 1 Player requirements: 18+ Reliable attendance LGBTQ+ friendly, we have had LGBTQ+ players before and still have in other sessions.  About the game You’re sitting by the fire, going through what little the dungeon still had to offer, when you hear the sage curse under his breath. “I know that place… I know it.” It’s not the first time you’ve seen the carving down here. A half-buried panel in the stone, easy to overlook. It shows a city of amber and gold, with windows carved from resin, streets laid in shining metal, birds with gem-set eyes perched in the trees, and poets and wizards walking its streets. A story everyone knows. A city swallowed in an earthquake, gone in a single night. A tale told so often it barely registers anymore. At first, it seems like nothing. Just the same old legend carved into stone. But the sage is already on his feet, brushing dirt away, staring at something you hadn’t paid attention to before. “There. Look. That wasn’t there.” To the east of the city, faint but deliberate, the carving continues. A coastline. Not decorative, but drawn with intent. You’ve seen depictions of the city before, in carvings, tapestries, and old stories, but never like this. Never with a location. The wizard’s voice cuts through the quiet. “I know that coast. That’s Al-Zahir.” You now have something no one else does. Not just a legend, but a direction. A place tied to a real coastline, one that should be empty. There’s a town not far from there, though “town” is generous. It’s barely holding together. The Sultan is dead, his heirs are fighting over what’s left, and the region is slipping into open conflict. Patrols are thin, authority is scattered, and no one is in a position to care what a group of adventurers is doing along the coast. Following the carving, you find it. Not a city, at least not yet, but an entrance. Subtle, easy to miss, but real. Dust lies thick across the stone, undisturbed. No tracks, no signs of prior entry. Nothing like the dungeon you came from. Whatever this place is, it hasn’t been picked over. If the carving is even partly true, there is more wealth below than most people see in a lifetime. The question isn’t whether it’s there. It’s how deep it goes, and whether you can keep it to yourselves once you start bringing it back up.

Quest unto the Horizon

Hail Citizens!  Please lend me an ear! My lord is currently looking for 3 light footed wanderers, wizened devouts, brilliant magi, battle tested heroes, errant knights or swashbucklers of stout heart, adventurous nature and non-evil alignment to join us in the realm in search of adventure, fame, and fortune. Our experienced storyteller of 4 decades will vividly bring the realm to life at a time to be determined once we check with the schedules of the people playing. 2e handbooks can be sourced for character creation. No half elves, elves, or villains need apply. Game is over discord; if you're interested, please send me a message so I can arrange for you to have an interview with the dungeon master. Slots to be filled for an ongoing game on Thursday at 5th level, and a new game that's yet to start at 1st level on Mondays.

Dark Sun: A little knowledge

I’m looking to attempt running a 2e Dark Sun game as you may have gathered from the title. I’ll be running the pre written adventure “A Little Knowledge where the party starts off in the depths of a slave hold traversing the Athasian desert! A disclaimer about me is that I’m pretty new to dm’ing. And frankly I don’t have much experience with 2e aside from a few online games. And Dark Sun is a setting that most people wouldn’t recommend for beginners. However, everyone’s gotta start somewhere and I have a soft spot for this setting in particular. I’m looking to run either a voice or play by post game, each having its own advantages and disadvantages. All are welcome, however I’m hoping for a party of a three to five players. It won’t be first come first serve but once I’ve found a group of like minded people I plan to start the game as soon as possible. Thanks for reading this wall of text and I look forward to playing! (Also this is free! I don't think I'm good enough to ask for money yet lol!)

Come follow these Old Strange Roads to adventure!

Howdy! The name’s Jay (22, He/Him) and I’m looking for players willing to delve into Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2e with me. This will be my first romp in the system but I have been GMing for about 4 years now. AD&D has been something I wanted to try for almost 2 years now. This is why I am starting another group to, hopefully, join me on this adventure! The game will be taking place on Thursdays at 7:30 PM CST. Likely ending around 10:40-ish cause people have lives. Maybe around 11 if the players want to. We will do a quick session 0 on the 20th before starting play. The game will be hosted on Owlbear Rodeo and Discord, so a decent Mic is required. This also means there will be no built-in character sheet but AD&D isn’t the most complex system. So players who don’t mind filling in documents or pdfs are preferred. WE WILL ONLY BE DOING VOICE. No video at all. The setting is simple, a fantasy world full of dangers and wonders. Along with most of the world filled to the brim with humans. Kin, Non-humans, are slowly shrinking compared to humanity. The adventure is all about dungeon-crawling and adventure. With the party starting in a small village called Crossroads that is nearby a dungeon. There are alterations to the standard AD&D 2e rules, those can be found in the form below! So if you want to join, feel free to fill it out too! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe-R3D7ET8_Zxy1uhK1OEsLCAExYcpBKt8fUy9kWeQhKK8dvA/viewform?usp=dialog

How to find a D&D game near you

D&D is the game most people mean when they say tabletop RPG - one player runs the world, everyone else plays a character in it. You do not need to own a book, and you do not need to know the rules before you sit down.

  1. Set the area. Press "Use my location" for an exact reading, or type your city. Everything on this page reorders by travel distance.
  2. Widen the circle before you give up. Most people find their table in the nearest city rather than their own street, so try 150 mi before deciding the area is empty.
  3. Read the listing, then message inside Groupfinder. Your contact details stay yours until you decide to share them.
  4. Post that you are looking. Half the matches on this site run the other way round, with the game master finding the player.

Questions people ask

How do I find a D&D group near me?

Let this page read your rough location, or type a city into the location box. It then lists every open D&D table sorted by distance, closest first. Widen the radius if your town is quiet - most people find a game in the nearest city rather than their own street.

Which D&D editions can I filter for?

5E (which includes the 2024 rules, sometimes called 5.5E), 4E, 3.5E, AD&D 2nd Edition and original AD&D. The page shows all of them together by default, so you can see the whole local scene before narrowing down.

What if there are no D&D games in my area?

Then post that you are looking. A player profile takes a couple of minutes and it puts you in front of every Dungeon Master searching your area. In the meantime, the online section further down this page is open to everyone.

Do I need to know the rules before joining?

No. Plenty of the groups listed here say outright that they welcome beginners, and most Dungeon Masters would rather teach you than hand you a 300 page book. The rules get learned by playing them.
